The Chopta Chandrashila trek is located in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district at an altitude of 13,100 feet. This quaint village is known for its natural beauty and rich Uttarakhand traditions. The trek forms a scenic loop leading to Chandrashila Peak, with the stunning Deoriatal Lake along the way. Deoriatal, the first major stop on the trek, sits at 7,800 feet and is surrounded by lush forests, offering amazing views of snow-covered peaks. Chopta, from where the trek begins, is just 77 km from the highly revered Kedarnath Dham Temple. Among the Char Dham Routes, which encompasses a fantastic journey, a trekking expedition like Chopta-Chandrachila is no less enthralling.
The Trekking Itinerary from Chopta to Chandrashila Peak
Day 1 - Arrival at Rishikesh or Dehradun
Based on your choice of commuting, reach Rishikesh by boarding a train or Dehradun by boarding a flight. From here, your journey to the higher altitude begins. The journey has to be covered by road from Dehradun or Rishikesh to Chopta. It takes almost 7-8 hours to reach Chopta. After checking into the camp, unwind yourself for the remaining hours of the day. Get proper rest to prepare yourself for the next day’s trek.
Day 2 - Whole Day’s Trek from Copta to Chandrashila and Back
The trekking distance from Chopta to Chandrashila is approximately 5.5 km. You will descend the same day after reaching the summit of Chandrashila Peak. Therefore, your feet will be covering a distance of about 11-12 km. Start early for the day after a light breakfast and ascend to Tunganath Temple, the first half of the trek. The distance from Tunganath Temple to Chandrashila Peak is approximately 3 km.
When you reach Tungnath Temple, take a moment to marvel at the highest Shiva temple in the world. Spend some time exploring the peaceful surroundings of Tungnath, which include lush green forests and picturesque landscapes. A short trek from Tungnath will take you to the highest point of the journey, Chandrashila Peak. At Chandrashila, you’ll be greeted with a spectacular 180-degree view of iconic Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Bandarpunch, Chaukhamba, and Kedar Peak. Take a break to rest and capture stunning photographs of the scenery. Once refreshed, begin your descent back to Chopta, often referred to as Uttarakhand’s mini-Switzerland.
Back in Chopta, wander through the nearby meadows and forests, taking in the serene beauty of the area. End your day by relaxing around a bonfire, surrounded by the tranquil Himalayan ambiance of Chopta.
Day 3 - Drive Back to Rishikesh or Dehradun
The next morning, after the morning tea and breakfast, embark on your vehicle and drive back to Rishikesh or Dehradun. If possible, you can plan a day’s stopover at any of these cities to engage yourself in local sightseeing. Then, on the next day head back to Delhi or your destination city.
